Scholars in Medicine Announces Fellowships for 2001

At a reception held Nov. 1, the largest number of fellows in the six-year history of the 50th Anniversary Program for Scholars in Medicine was celebrated. Forty new awardees were announced, bringing the total number of recipients to 140. Their names, titles, and awards are listed below. The expansion of the program reflects the growing participation of the HMS community. The fellowships have been funded by faculty, hospitals, departments, schools, alumnae, foundations, and corporate sponsors.

The purpose of the program is to enhance the quality and diversity of the Faculty of Medicine by providing protected time or increased research assistance for junior faculty who are pursuing an academic career at the same time as they are assuming heavy personal or family responsibilities.

The sixth annual celebration on Nov. 1 of the 50th Anniversary Program for Scholars in Medicine saw the number of new fellowships grow to 40 from 31 last year. After opening remarks by HMS dean Joseph Martin, Eleanor Shore called attention to another measure of the program's growth: this year's increase in two-year rather than one-year awards. The HMS dean for faculty affairs, Shore said her favorite calculation is the total amount of support given since the program's inception, which now tops $3.4 million. Martin Announces Clinical Department Reviews

A program to conduct periodic external peer reviews of all clinical departments affiliated with HMS was announced by medical dean Joseph Martin at the department heads conference on Oct. 4. HMS already conducts periodic reviews of preclinical departments, and Martin said hospital leaders agree with the need for clinical department reviews.

The program is directed by Raphael Dolin, HMS dean for clinical programs, and four reviews have already been conducted or are under way. The process covers the research, educational, and clinical activities of each department. The effectiveness of the leadership in meeting departmental and institutional goals and the national stature of the department are important areas of consideration.

According to Dolin, the process has been refined based on the reviews that have already been conducted. Briefly, department chairs are notified of the intended review and are asked to prepare a comprehensive and detailed report of the department activities for the previous five-year period. With input from the department and the hospital, the Dean's Office selects and invites three expert external reviewers to come to campus for a two-day review. A confidential report is prepared by the reviewers and presented to the dean and hospital president at the end of the visit. The program plans to review each clinical department at least once every five years.

"We recognize the effort that will be required of clinical departments as they undergo this process," said Dolin. "However, we hope that these reviews will be valuable not only to the Medical School and hospital leadership but also to each department as it plans for the future."

Robin Charpentier of the Office of the Dean for Clinical Programs administers the program, assisted by Julie Dwyer; they can be reached at 432-5590.
