RESOURCES Digital Library Now Open for Business to HMS, HSPH ID Holders
Because of the success of the Digital Library pilot project, HMS dean Joseph Martin has agreed to fund the program beyond the pilot period, which ended Aug. 31, for all HMS ID holders throughout the Harvard medical community. As of Aug. 1, HSPH ID holders also gained access. Launched by Countway Library in September 2000, the program offers a collection of electronic resources available to registered users anytime from anywhere in the world. Its breadth has grown considerably since then; for example, approximately 455 new full-text journals have been added. Use of the Digital Library also has steadily increased, rising to more than 16,000 visits in July. Users have taken advantage of the 24-hour availability of resources like Medline, the Science Citation Index database, and more than 1,400 full-text journals and 65 full-text books such as Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. The original goals of the project were to provide access to a common set of resources for all HMS faculty and students at all affiliated institutions; reduce overall costs of electronic resources among affiliated institutions; and provide a strong tie to eCommons, a platform offering a variety of links and resources to the HMS community. With the help of a gift from former Harvard President Neil Rudenstine, access to a portion of the digital resources was extended to staff at the HMS-affiliated institutions who did not have an HMS ID. Countway staff and librarians at the affiliated institutions have explored different cost-sharing models in order to continue access to the Digital Library for these hospital staff members. This summer, a new financial plan was proposed to the affiliate librarians and other representatives from these institutions through the Digital Library Steering Committee. Several affiliates have subsequently indicated an interest in paying for access to selected resources for their staff. Anyone who currently has an HMS ID or is eligible to obtain one can register to use the Digital Library at http://ecommons.med. harvard.edu. Select the Digital Library link and complete and submit the registration form. HSPH ID holders should go to the HSPH website and click on Countway Library to register. A user ID and password for the Digital Library will arrive by e-mail. Users or prospective users should direct any questions about the Digital Library to Patricia Riley, Digital Library Coordinator, at 617-432-2213.
