HMS/HSDM CLASS DAY: Science Applied to Problems of the Poor In his keynote address at the HMS/HSDM Class Day ceremony on June 10, Nobel laureate Norman Borlaug (center) recounted his 60-year career using science to combat famine the world over. Credited as a leader of the green revolution for developing high-yield, disease-resistant wheat, Borlaug told the 231 graduates that their leadership was essential to the future. HSPH CLASS DAY: Farmer Urges Graduates to Address Health and Social Disparities Medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer (left) called on HSPH graduates to invest in protecting the health of the poorest populations in whatever way they could. "There is no single compass for as diverse an endeavor as public health as you will practice it across this broad world," he said. HSPH dean Barry Bloom (right) echoed Farmer's sentiments, adding that narrowing the gap between wealthy and poor countries and their access to resources is critical.

ALUMNI DAY SYMPOSIUM: HMS Alums Take on the Health Care Crisis At the HMS alumni day symposium, "Navigating the Healthcare crisis," Steffie Woolhandler, cofounder of Physicians for a National Health Program, made a convincing case for single-payer health insurance. Such a system, which already receives tacit approval by many Americans, would aim to redirect funds toward broader care and reduced bureaucracy.
