Training Institute Aids LMA Workers, Employers

On Feb. 3, 110 employees from HMS, HSDM, and six other area institutions graduated from the Boston Health Care and Research Training Institute, a community- employer partnership giving Longwood Medical Area employees an opportunity to advance from entry-level to skilled jobs at LMA institutions. The flip side of this win-win endeavor is that employers gain by limiting turnover in frequently vacant skilled positions. Eric Buehrens, HMS executive dean for administration, hosted the ceremony and Joseph Dionisio, president and CEO of New England Baptist Hospital, gave the keynote address.

The training institute began in May 2002 under the direction of the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation and the Fenway Community Development Corporation in cooperation with all the major health and research employers in the LMA. Currently, 21 employers are institute partners. The institute provides training, education, and career coaching to employees and helps them identify preferred careers and the necessary steps to achieve their goals. In 2003, more than 300 employees enrolled at the institute, many of them seeking jobs like radiologic technologist, registered nurse, or medical coder, which often have high vacancy rates.

In addition to the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, the organizations with fall-term graduates of the institute are Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Children's Hospital, the Dana- Farber Cancer Institute, New England Baptist Hospital, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

Funding to support the growing partnership comes from the Boston Workforce Development Initiative, the Hyams Foundation, the Neighborhood Jobs Trust of the City of Boston, the state's BEST Initiative, and employer investments. The John Merck Fund and the Herman and Frieda Miller Foundation also have provided support for 2004.

The training institute is located at the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation. For general information, contact Elizabeth Chege, institute coordinator, at 617-522-2424, ext. 254. Harvard employees interested in taking a course should contact Phuounmai Nguyen-Holmes at 617-267-4637 or pnguyen@fenwaycdc.org.
