On Sept. 2, 165 first-year students joined the ranks of doctors-to-be in the White Coat Ceremony at each of the student societies. At right, Milena Petranovic of the Cannon Society gets a hand from Kate Treadway, HMS assistant professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. The Class of 2008, selected from more than 5,300 applicants, is 47 percent female and 53 percent male, and 44 percent are from minority groups. The incoming class includes representatives of 52 undergraduate institutions, 33 states (plus Puerto Rico), and five foreign countries. A pre-orientation program, the First-year Urban Neighborhood Campaign, took place from Aug. 23 to 27, introducing 55 members of the class to outreach opportunities in the Boston area. Student participants worked at six different sites that serve the community. Pictured at right (bottom) is HMS student Munirih Qualls playing with a child at Jamaica Plain's Casa Nueva Vida.
