Formerly the associate dean for academic and clinical programs, Jules Dienstag is HMS’s new dean for medical education.

Jules Dienstag, HMS professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and HMS associate dean for academic and clinical programs, was appointed the new dean for medical education at HMS, effective May 1. Dienstag has been a member of the Gastrointestinal Unit at MGH since 1976. From 1998 to 2003, he served as faculty associate dean for admissions, and in September 2003, he was named associate dean for academic and clinical programs, working closely with Ray Dolin, dean for academic and clinical programs.

Dienstag has aided Joseph Martin, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, since November 2004 in guiding the Program in Medical Education and the Medical Education Reform Initiative. In revamping medical education, he has focused on community-wide involvement, meeting with basic science and clinical department heads and the chairs of the departmental executive committees. He also has brought together the preclinical and basic science course directors and core clerkship directors to engage them in reform efforts and listen to their ideas and thoughts about the changes being proposed. Dienstag has worked to ensure a constant flow of communication to the greater community and to students in an effort to keep everyone up to date on progress and issues.

“Jules has done an outstanding job,” said Martin, “and has earned the respect and admiration of the entire HMS community as a thoughtful and confident leader committed to our students.”

Dienstag said: “We are fortunate to have so many dedicated, passionate teachers on our faculty, and I am excited about working with them to realize our vision for enhancing the medical education experience of our students. I am also energized by the task of harnessing and reinforcing the strengths of the Program in Medical Education and working with its committed staff in fulfilling the HMS mission.”
