HMS/HSDM CLASS DAY: Sachs Applies Clinical
Thinking to Suffering Worldwide
Economist Jeffrey Sachs, the keynote speaker at the HMS/HSDM graduation ceremony,
urged a focused clinical and economic approach to ease the burden of disease
and poverty around the world. Bringing international resources to bear on specific
problems, like AIDS in certain regions of Africa, could radically improve the
health and well-being of afflicted populations.

HSPH CLASS DAY: Funding Teeters But Public Health
Problems Persist
HSPH commencement speaker Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, told her audience that despite potential budget cuts
for public health, serious needs such as health disparities and chronic diseases
continue to demand attention. A Harvard degree will help in organizing efforts
to reach solutions, she said.

FACULTY TALKS: Speakers Chart Directions
in Stem Cell Research
The Harvard-wide stem cell initiative may be the most concentrated program in
the world in stem cell research, according to David Scadden, co-director of the
Harvard Stem Cell Institute. One of the institute scientists who presented at
the Faculty Symposium was Amy Wagers (left), who is investigating lineages of
early muscle progenitor cells in mice.
