Hans-Olov Adami, HSPH adjunct professor of epidemiology, was named the chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the School, effective Feb. 1. Adami, a professor of cancer epidemiology at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, has been an adjunct professor at the School since 1992. He has encouraged collaboration between the HSPH community and the Karolinska Institute, making Swedish data sources available for research and thesis work and recruiting students and postdocs from HSPH to work at the institute. His research focuses on cancer epidemiology, specifically prostate cancer and the relationship between hormones and cancer.
Stepping down as chair is Meir Stampfer, HSPH professor of nutrition and epidemiology and HMS professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Stampfer has chaired the department for the past seven years, during which he organized symposia on the controversial topics of obesity and mortality and the role of postmenopausal hormones in cardiovascular disease, recruited new junior faculty members, and developed a growing reserve account under the School’s new financial model. Stampfer will remain a faculty member in the department.
